For Families & Friends

Visiting Hours

Children 14 years and younger are prohibited by the Nebraska Department of Health and may only visit by special arrangement. Children must be accompanied by an adult while visiting or waiting in the lobbies.

Patients and visitors are asked to follow these guidelines:

  • Only two visitors at a time. Be respectful of other patients if you are sharing a room.
  • Keep visits short. Be sensitive to patient discomfort and the need for rest.
  • Visitors may be asked to leave so that patient care can be provided.
  • Persons with infectious illnesses are asked not to visit.

If you are not sure if you have a contagious condition, please speak with the nursing staff. During outbreaks of infectious illnesses visitation may be restricted. Please observe the following visiting hours:

General
10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Parents may visit their hospitalized children at any time.

Surgery
Visits are allowed outside regular visiting hours on the day of surgery. Special surgery waiting rooms are located on Level 2 of The Nebraska Medical Center Clarkson/University.

Pediatrics
Parents may visit any time, including overnight stays. Other visitors may visit during regular visiting hours or by special arrangement. Grandparents, brothers and sisters 14 and older may visit during regular visiting hours. Younger siblings may visit by special arrangement.

Maternity
Fathers may visit at any time. Others may visit from 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Siblings may visit by special arrangement with the nurse.

Intensive Care/Special Care Units
Visits are limited in the adult, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units and the oncology/hematology special care units. Visitors should discuss visiting guidelines with the nursing staff. No visitors are allowed in the unit during the change of shift report, from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. and from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Families are asked to designate one family member to communicate with the nurse by phone to allow the nurse more time with the patient. Clergy may visit any time at the discretion of the patient's nurse. A special critical care waiting area is provided on the eighth floor at Clarkson.

Outpatient Care Center (The Nebraska Medical Center Clarkson)
Visits are limited to two guests per patient. Visitors may be in the area during normal procedure or testing hours.

Burn Center
Visits are limited to two guests per patient at a time from 1:00 to 8:30 p.m. Please check at the nursing station for special instructions.

Flowers & Balloons

Live or dried flowers are not allowed in some patient care areas of the hospital. The nursing staff and the gift shop staff can help you make appropriate selections. We recommend the use of Mylar balloons because of the potential hazards that latex balloons pose for our patients.

Parking

Parking is available in the following visitor/patient parking areas:

The Nebraska Medical Center Clarkson
Near the main entrance to the hospital. Special parking areas are available for Emergency Services patients and those patients receiving treatment in Radiation/Oncology. Access to this area is via the Emergency Services entrance at 44th Street, one-half block north of Dewey Avenue.

The Nebraska Medical Center University
In the parking structure at 45th and Emile Streets. To enter the main lobby of The Nebraska Medical Center University and the Durham Outpatient Center, take the parking structure elevators to Level 1.

Gift Shops

CornerStone Gifts
The University Hospital Auxiliary at The Nebraska Medical Center gift shop, CornerStone Gifts, is located on Level 2 of the Durham Outpatient Center. CornerStone Gifts offers fresh flowers, plants, jewelry, greeting cards, candy, magazines, books, long distance phone cards, postage stamps, toys, fun hats, Mylar balloons, seasonal gifts and personal items. Major credit cards are accepted. Store hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 7:45 p.m., Monday through Friday; noon to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Please call (402) 559-4198 to arrange for free floral and gift delivery anywhere on the main campus.

Clarkson Gift Shop
The Nebraska Medical Center Clarkson Service League Gift Shop is located on Level 1 near the main entrance to the Clarkson Tower Lobby and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; Saturday and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and closed holidays. Clarkson Gift shop is a full service shop featuring many of the best known gift lines. You can find something for everybody - from baby to Grandparents. We can fill your needs with a variety of candies, magazines and books, cards, balloons, sundries and wonderful bouquets of cut flowers or beautiful green plants. To order that special floral arrangement sent to a patient's room, call (402) 552-3290. Major credit cards are accepted.

Thrift Shop

The University Hospital Auxiliary at The Nebraska Medical Center Thrift Shop is located at 667 S. 42nd Street, one-half block north of Leavenworth Street. Clothing, housewares, toys, books and more are available. Donations are welcome and tax deductible. A drop box is located outside the front of the Thrift Shop. Store hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, closed Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. For more information please call (402) 559-6486.

Proceeds from the gift shops, the thrift shop and other fund-raising activities are donated to The Nebraska Medical Center for the purchase of medical equipment and other items that directly benefit patients.

Cash/Change/Check Cashing

Automated teller machines are located at The Nebraska Medical Center University on Level 2 near CornerStone Gifts and on Level 3 near the Nebraska Cafe exit. At The Nebraska Medical Center Clarkson, automated teller machines are located on Level 1 near the Gift Shop and inside the Clarkson Café. You may obtain change from the $1 bill changers in the Level 3 vending area of The Nebraska Medical Center University. You may cash checks up to $10 in the Access Services office on Level 1 of the Durham Outpatient Center between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Fitness Facilities

The Nebraska Medical Center patients and family members who are staying at Nebraska House, Ronald McDonald House or Potter's House may use the UNMC Center for Healthy Living at 39th and Jones streets free of charge. Contact staff at these locations for further details.

Handicap Accessibility

Handicapped visitors are provided parking and barrier-free access to all areas in the hospital. Restrooms designed to accommodate physically handicapped persons are located at various locations in the hospital. Anyone requiring additional assistance should contact security at (402) 559-4439.
